Location: Bald Head Island Croquet Club, Bald Head Island, NC The Bald Head Island - 24th Invitational was held May 30-Jun 5, 2011. The Grand Haven Croquet Club was represented by Joe & Anne Marie Zilligen, Antonia & Vincent Marmo at this USCA sanctioned event. The tournament was limited to 32 players with Handicaps of 10 and under and offered three flight of competition in both singles and Waterford doubles. The tournament was well organized, the courts were outstanding, the views to die for, and the people were warm and caring...Southern Hospitality at it’s Best!!! |

Getting there is half the fun!!!
Bald Head Island is like taking a vacation in the Caribbean with the opportunity to play Croquet. The ferry leaves the mainland at Southport and travels 20 minutes to the island. The island is a three mile complex of about 12,000 acres including the salt marsh, creeks, and 14 miles of pristine beaches. |

There are no cars allowed on island, so transportation is limited to golf carts, bicycles, and walking.
Our hosts, Jenny Dees & Peter Stirrup, met us at the Marina for a ride to our lodging and a tour of the island.

Practice was Monday afternoon, followed by a Cocktail Party. Play began on Tuesday and continued through Saturday, with the evenings filled with Cocktails & Dinner at the Club, Potluck Dinner at a home of a Club Member, Gala in White at the Club, and an Awards Luncheon Brunch.

Vincent played in the First Flight with players who’s handicaps ranged from 3 1/2 - 6. |

|
Antonia & Joe played in the Second Flight against players who’s handicaps ranged from 7 - 10. Joe struggled to find his way, while Antonia won most of her games in the block, but then she lost her first game in the ladder. She was pleased with the end result lowering her handicap.

The Grand Haven players brought home three very nice Turtle Trophies. |

In doubles, Antonia won Second Place with her partner Peter Stirrup. Vincent had a hard time in the block, but found himself playing in the finals and won Second Place in Singles First Flight. In doubles, Vincent managed to take home the First Place trophy in First Flight.
