Six players traveled to the Sarasota County Croquet Club Fall Invitational held November 20-24, 2013. We arrived for practice Thursday and attended an opening reception and dinner at the Manasota Key Beach Club. What a beautiful sunset!
Tom Shelko played in the First Flight, which consisted of 12 players with handicaps ranging from 5 to 8. Tom played five games in block play and finished high enough to play Sunday.
He lost in his semi-final match, but earned enough points to change from an 8 to a 7 handicap.
Bob Crouch, Paul Beaulieu, John Fitterman, Bill Todd, and Daniele Todd played in the Third Flight. There were 12 players in this flight, with six players in each block. The handicaps ranged from 9 to 12. Bob, Paul, and John had played in this tournament last year, with Bob returning as the undefeated champion. This was the first real tournament (other than the rookie tournament) for Bill and Daniele.
We played cross block, which meant we played players from SCCC Friday and Saturday. After the block play, the four players with a handicap of 12 had been eliminated. Bill Todd defeated John Fitterman in the quarterfinals, Bob Crouch in the semi-finals (for his only loss in two years there) and Steffie Robertson in the finals. Bill changed from an 11 to a 10 handicap.
