Croquet is not a game of strength and power; therefore it is played equally by men and women of all ages.
In the annals of history there have been events to determine who was the greatest and the best. Two thousand years ago, within the Roman coliseums, gladiators fought to the death, using mace, swords and axes, to show who was deemed the numero uno. One thousand years ago, armored knights jousted using lances and swords, on the lawn for victory and honor. And now, one thousand years later we are about to witness, within the hedge bound confines of Creekside field using wooden mallets...THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES

George Betz, PC-ESPN SPORTS press release May 14, 2011 This reporter covered an event located in a retirement community called Grand Haven located in Palm Coast, Florida. It was a croquet event called “Battle of the Sexes”. Grand Haven is noted as one of the top croquet clubs in the United States. As I understand, this is a yearly event which puts the men against the women to see who is the best. I witnessed the entire event hidden in one of the white equipment boxes locate adjacent to the fields. The women were beautiful and stunning in their dress whites. The men; well they were in whites. The event consisted of three games. Game 1 saw the women jump out to a big lead with a point spread of 60 to 46, this game involved “low” handicap players. It was obvious that the women outplayed the men. Game # 2 saw the intermediate and high handicapped men outplay the ladies; using their bisques effectively to push the men ahead to 116 points to 99. It got nasty in the third game. The president (in camouflage) was threaten by a lovely lady carrying a 10” nail. Shouting and threats continued throughout the third game only calmed by what was a coin toss to decide the correct answer to the argument. In the end, the men prevailed with 7 wins to the ladies 5 plus wickets to total a win of 200 to 151 point total, which gave the men a 2 to 1 lead. This included 5 points for each of the 3 men and 2 women spectators. The unrest continued as the players headed for their cars. From this reporter’s viewpoint, the women could not wait until next year. |

A protest was filed following the “Battle of the Sexes” at the Grand Haven Croquet Club. Citing the Men’s failure to follow the rules allowing coaches on the field to mentor all players, handing out all the Bisques to the Men’s Team, and failure to keep an accurate time clock, the Women immediately challenged the Men to a rematch. The Tournament Director was also called on the carpet for using a two-headed coin to resolve disputes favoring the Men 100% of the time. The Women will not fall to defeat without a fight, even if they kiss and make up after. |
